"Sound of Donald Duck" was recorded at Wet Mix Studios in 1998, but never released and never played live before (I always like it when bands that have taken time off come back and bring up obscure songs that they didn't used to play). Mostly stuck with funny songs, except for the "serious song" block in the middle. My voice is way out of shape, but I had a good time and Amy McNally (who played on the "Geeks Gone Wild" album) ROCKED throughout. Recording will be posted soon.

Scapegoat was formed in 1995 in an eighth grade algebra class. They reconvene every so often to write and record an album of oft-inappropriate songs. Adding Dave, the trumpet player from Suburban Post Modernist, and Michelle, who sang backup on Clark Street Carols, made some of these songs sound better than they ever had before by a considerable margin. led to an odd setlist. Weird joint. The ceiling is caving in, and the stage is also a storage
area stocked with old file cabinets, broken vcrs, etc. Like playing in someone's old
basement, which they tried to make into a rec center in the early 80's.

Jeff played accordion on the first three songs, then switched to guitar for the last three. The sound system
was such that every loud rhythm guitar strum yielded a sound from the amp like Snap, Crackle and Pop
dying a terrible death, so several guitar-based songs that were supposed to be played were dropped. The songs were re-arranged on the spot into much slower-than-normal versions.
They sounded great on the stage, but the mix was probably so bad that they would have sounded awful from
anywhere else. This band will make up the core of the sound on the new album.

Playing at a con required a set skewed towards sillier songs, but the whole thing went
very well indeed. "One Last Short Poem" is a new song, which, along with "New York Rain," has
been appearing at most of my sets at the Gallery Cabaret and Subterranean in Chicago, which aren't
really kept track of around here. The con was an absolute delight. Got to hang out with Terrence Chua, Rand and Adam from Ookla the Mok, Escape Key, Blake Hodgetts and others. Stayed at a hippie commune for a couple of
days outside of San Fransisco. Got to see the City Lights bookstore, the pirate store at 826 Valencia, and the view from the hills.

I went on a bike ride on October 1st of 1994. The week before, my friend
Seth and I had gone riding (searching for garage sales, as usual) through the
"historic" part of town (which dated back to about the 40's) and found an old fire
station. On the first, I drove all over that neighborhood, but couldn't find the
fire station again. But I had "Sullivan Street" stuck in my head that night, so I tried
it tonight, along with the brand-new "Don't Forget your Hat, Justine" a rewritten "Crime of the Century,"
and the never-played-by-me "Tain't No Sin (Dance Around In Your Bones)" Lots of new stuff
for one set.

A fine set, if I do say so, the first show with Joe in over a year! The extension of "Lullaby" was a verse from Bob Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" at the beginning, and a verse of Dylan Thomas' "In My Craft or Sullen Art" at the end. "Rains" was a new rock arrangement. "Hallelujah" was a rocked up version of the Cohen song and a highlight of the set for me.

"Last Gentleman in Europe" and "Ride that Train On Home" were both written just today; the former is another one for "Wilde! The Musical," and the latter is a Johnny Cash-style song. Since nearly every song was either a new song or a new arrangement, the quality of the set suffered a bit, but it wasn't bad. At some point in the middle, I did about a verse of a country version of "Opposites Attract," the old Paula Abdul/MC Skat Cat duet.

Amanda Pratt's debut as a part of the band was a fine set indeed. A couple of kinks (mainly electrical) remain, but they'll certainly be worked out in time for the tour, and adding the organ/piano improved the overall feel of the set immensely. "x" was requested, loudly, by about 10 people at once, marking the first time I've played it in several months. The first really good set of 2002, and it was, indeed REALLY a good set. The singing seemed good, the setlist was very good. I'd forgotten how hard "Cats" is to play. "Cheerleaders" really seems to be catching on in this town. "Irene" was, as usual, made up of verses from Waits' "Innocent When You Dream," but there was no "animal" ending.

Excellent show. Jamie and I hadn't rehearsed together at all, but he's a fine improviser. "Come Home Father" is a highly melodramatic Victorian parlor song about the evils of drinking; I always wanted to play it in a brewery. Jamie's work on the higher frets made it sound great. Other highlights included "Sixty-Six," the premieres of "After it Rains Again," (which was written the previous night) and "The Radio is Haunted." I hadn't planned on playing "Snowflakes In Your Hair" at all, but it was probably the best version of the song ever.

Started off the set with a fully impromptu Rosencrantz and Guildenstern reunion, then played a few songs from the new album plus the brand-new "Old Men All Play Sixty-Six," which sounded all right. I used to think that every R and G show would be the last one, but now I've come to think that playing with Ryan is like watching "E.T." Sooner or later, now and then, your just have to do it and that's all there is to it. Soundcheck included "Cum on Feel the Noise,(Quiet Riot)" "Gold Diggers of 1996 (stiffs inc)," and, with Ryan, "The Irish Ballad (Lehrer)." After the set, Ryan and I recorded a cover of the stiffs, inc song "Fear in the Night" to the tune of "Lullaby in 12 Nursery Rhymes."

There's something about playing outdoor shows when the sun is out that I just don't like. The festival was held on a nature reserve which featured cabins dating back to the civil war (Hey, General Sherman - you missed a spot!). Every technical problem that could happen did - the guitar had to be miked, and couldn't be turned up very well. Due to monitor problems, no one on stage could hear what anyone else was doing (I myself could only really hear the drums for the most part), resulting in a set similar to Dylan's at "Live Aid." Not, in other words, the best show imaginable. There were some highlights, but a lot of these songs just don't sound as good during the day as they do at night. Luckily, minimal promotion resulted in a crowd which mostly already knew me from the Peckerhead Shows, so I didn't damage my reputation or anything. I must commend Jamie Warner for doing as well as he did, considering all of the monitor problems and everything. He could really only tell what to play by looking at my hands.

Superduper! We had to shorten the set (this being the "finals" night of the great Calvin's Shoot Out), but it was, on the whole, possibly the best show we've ever played. "Black" was sped up and rocked up. "Dread" was spooky as ever (Margret really wailed on the violin tonight, moreso than usual). "Sedated," our tribute to Joey Ramone, went over very well indeed. To top it off, the recording came out great, Lucy King took a whole bunch of pictures (which'll soon be online, along with a really great set of pictures taken by Brent Green), and we won the "shoot out!" Can't give enough credit to Margret and Joe for playing as well as they did tonight. Closed off the evening by spending several hours at Huddle House (Happy Birthday to Brent!)

Ah, nice to have Margret back. Lovely, really. We played a very good set, indeed, to a very good crowd. I could go on doing this sort of show forever (especially if the show were a little bit longer), and it may kill me if I can't. After the crowd thinned out, the 8-9 people remaining convinced me to do another set, which also went well. If all goes well, Margret will be back on April 19th. (note: the recording of the show is missing the first track and opening comment ("Hello, I'm not Johnny Cash"), and the violin sound isn't as loud as it ought to be.)

Decent show, notable for the first time I recall covering Stiffs Inc, the introduction of my new guitar (thanks, Gwen!) which I've dubbed "The Willing Mr. K" (hence the Stiffs Inc song), and the first time I've ended a set with "black is the color," which was written strictly to open sets. Also, as usual, played accordion in the house band, even getting to take a solo on "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."

Between a scratchy throat and a nasty cough, I wasn't in good shape tonight. Felt like Shane Macgowan must feel on a normal night. So, I decided to screw with the set. Played a lot of old stuff, much of which I haven't played in a long time, and only a couple of songs that'll be on the next album (including the premiere of "Present Company Excluded.") While some songs were very good, others were decidely mediocre (mixing large portions of "Marlene on the Wall" into "Cats" seemed like a good idea at the time.) Between songs, I played the part of the old drunken rock star, telling silly stories that didn't make a lot of sense, but included the phrase "andthenIwrote" quite a bit. The highlight was the over-the-top dramatic version of "Dread."

The crowd was made up mostly of a group from the nearby highschool (at one point I commented that I had the strange feeling that I was in a commercial for The Gap), and I catered the set accordingly. Been a long time since I've found myself in a room that seemed so much as though it had been puked on by Total Request Live. That being said, though, it was a pretty good set, very enjoyable, and the crowd was actually far better than average. Ryan flew in from Boston just this morning, and we hastily arranged this set. I've been 20 for months now, and Ryan will be 20 in a week and a half, so we used this to get one last use out of the "America's Favorite Teenage Traditional Folk Duo" title. It turned out rather well, with two guitars on nearly every song. "Face to Face" was the only new song played (written and played by Ryan), but there were several traditional songs that I've never played before (and I hadn't done "Amazing Grace: A Train Song" in quite a while). A few of the songs will be on the next R and G record, due this summer. When it comes out, "Circa" will go out of print, but selected tracks from both it and the long out-of-print "North-Northwest Line" (plus the Star Wars album and the Marlowe Opera) will be collected on a disc called "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: The Singles 1592-1999." No drums, but one of the best shows of 2001 so far. Just about half of the songs contained the "whisper tell me I am the one" section of "Fumbling with the Blues," which worked well for them, and served to put a unifying thread through the show. Even turned the ending of Irene into "whisper tell me I am the one," which I thought was clever. The extension on "Snowflakes," was part of Dylan's "Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody," which seemed to work oddly well to me. Much better than last week. Much.

Didn't strike me as a terribly good set. "Old Mill" was pretty good. "Novelty" had some lyrical flubs, but could otherwise be called "blistering." "I Want You" wasn't as good as last night. Several songs had a verse of Dylan's "Buckets Of Rain" added in. The album was pitched in the following way: "What I hold here before me is new, improved, digital and old fashioned after a fashion. It's Uncle Herbert's Extra Rowdy Funeral, and it's germ-attacking, long lasting, fast-acting, tough-acting, over-acting, method-acting and lip smacking. If you don't like it, buy another and make a bicycle for your dog." I finished the set feeling fairly depressed for reasons unclear. Could've been longer, but I actually stopped it off by choice, which is rare indeed for me. They usually have to drag me off.

This was a very good show. Fine setlist, with possibly the best mix of old and new stuff in quite awhile. There are a couple of new lines in "Novelty," and ad-lips were added to "Goth." The piano segment was much, much better than last week, though the microphone stand fell over, and I had to hold it up with my mouth while singing, which really isn't quite as hard as it sounds. The lowlights were "Relationships," on which I couldn't remember all of the words, and "Rosebud," which sorely missed the violin part.I didn't find out the name of the second drummer until after the show, so he was introduced as Van Lingle Mungo.

I'd always wanted to try a bit on a keyboard or piano. Of course, if I'd known it would be tonight, I might've rehearsed a bit first. The piano segment of "Dread" wasn't what you'd call good. The organ version "Good Old World," however, was closer to tolerable. Other than that, it was a standard, longer-than-average set, with some uncommon songs and a badly buzzing guitar.

This was a very good show, excellent guitar, excellent vocals, and lots of fine drums. "Pray to the City" isn't quite done yet, but the rough draft went well. Went with the "Rocky Horror" version of "Little Debbie," and it went over quite well. Joe considers "At Night All Cats are Grey" to be the hardest thing he's ever had to play; I myself shouldn't sing it late in the set, as it takes a lot of voice to get through it. Of course, I'll never learn. Brother Steve did the best show I've seen him do to date.

Singing when you only have half a voice can be a lot of fun. Makes you appreciate the amazing control Tom Waits has over his (what a range!). First proper performance of the slightly reworked "Snowflakes In Your Hair," which'll be the title track of either the third or fourth record. "On the Road" was sung in my most screwed up voice of the evening, which worked pretty well. "Diamond" was also a bit gravelly. The voice is returning, albeit slowly, but singing with it as is is a truly entertaining challenge, and brings out some interesting results. Wish I had a piano.

Very, very good show. "Xmas Card" was jazzy and very good if I do say so. Hadn't planned to do any of the new, gloriously distasteful "Dance, Teenagers, Dance" (a parody of "Last Kiss"), but felt compelled to do so to get people to pay more attention. It worked. People loved it, sick and wrong though it was. "Motorbreath" was done as an impression of Johnny Cash. The maritime band recorded it that way last night.

Didn't know that Margret wasn't going to make it until right before the show...which made the cue sheet pretty well worthless. Hence, I gave my book o' songs to Brad, and let him pick which songs I should do (for the most part)(though some rare ones, like Empty Hall and In Search of His Grave, were my idea). This, of course, led me to play a lot of songs that I hadn't done in a while, and some I thought I'd never actually do. Many were entirely unrehearsed. Naturally, some of the songs weren't all that good, but some songs (such as "once more before I go," "Dread," "Uncle Herbert" and a nifty, on-spot re-invented version of "Black is the Color" stand out in my mind)were really well done. More than three times the length of the normal Calvin's set - 32 songs, over an hour and a half total, everything after "In Search of His Grave" was solo. This should cover for the fact that there may not be another Calvin's show for several weeks, due to various circumstances. (Wish it weren't so...I just don't get to play with margret often enough).

"The Purloined Election" continues. The same sort of political fervor as last night, but with much more humor (the whole election situation has become such a silly farce at this point). Political jokes between nearly every song."Follow" was a fine version, though not musically reworked, as last night, just some lyrics from "As Usual" thrown in. "Lullabye in 21 Nursery Rhymes" got it's debut, though we only did 12 of the 21. It still seems to be a bit uneven, but it was still good. Margret was really on tonight, especially considering the number of songs she hadn't really heard before ("Lullabye," "Chimes,") or hadn't heard more than once or twice, and not at all in a good month as far as I know ("Follow," "Toast.")...Joe was on, as well...drove "Follow" home hard, and provided a much-needed backup that kept "Lullabye" alive.Got a couple of fine black and white pictures which should be up soon. Really, really didn't feel like doing "Irene" tonight, but "Chimes of Freedom" made a great subsitute, and was perfectly timely. Last week, people were voting on a new name for Uncle Calvin's. Oddly enough, it was too close, and there has to be a re-vote. Really.

A set highly reflective of the situation in which we find ourselves (Gore wins popular vote, Bush may yet win electoral college via Florida recount). As I stated before "Chimes," "Dylan said that 'sometimes even the President of the United States must have to stand naked...' I don't know what's gonna happen, but I do know that a president who gets in without winning the popular votes is gonna have to be naked all the time." Chimes, by the way, was very, very good indeed. Enjoyed playing it a great deal, and the vocals were dead on. Managed to mention some more political stuff before "Toast," and did a verse about Bush and Gore in Irene. Very good set. Went over very well.

"Once More Before I Go" and "Angelina" were both written on monday. Also written this week, but not yet played, is one called "Lullabye in 21 Nursery Rhymes," and I'm quite pleased with it, just couldn't fit it in tonight. Opted to do "once more" instead, and it went over very well, despite the fact that Geoff and Joe spent the song trying to crack one another up. "Good Evening Dear" was better than the other time I played it, back in June. It still wasn't great, but the sound problems made it tough for anyone to know.

Wow, two venues in one night! Fun! The Corner set was very good, or at least it sounded good through the monitor (I hardly ever get to play with one of those). Lots of reverb, which helped the guitar sound a lot on "Novelty."

First set was mostly very good, but a bit uneven at times (though the problem certainly wasn't the violin). Some great performances (possibly the best "MTV" ever) mixed with some mediocre ones ("Uncle Herbert" just didn't quite work out right). Set Two was rather impromptu. Some late-comers wanted to hear "Goth," and I decided to keep going afterwards. Nothing spectacular.

Another very good show, except for a whole comedy of errors involving me stepping on chords, causing them to unplug from the PA. These past couple shows played with "Barbie and the Chipmunks" have been among the best shows I've ever played, certainly among the most enjoyable. Whheee!!!!! Best show EVER! I've wanted to play at least one live show with Margret playing violin for a long time (she's already recorded stuff for the album), and it was great! Everyone was very pleased. Geoff and Joe felt it was the best show we've done, I thought it was pretty close at least, and Margret was very happy as well. The band was introduced as "Geoff Weaver, Master of Men! Joe Cato, Master of Gentlemen, and the lovely Margret Chang, Mistress of the Dark!" I wrote "Dance in the Mirror, Fall in the Lane" just yesterday, and figured out how to play it about half an hour before the show. Margret added fine violin, though I had to wrack my brains to remember what the words were. Felt like doing "shalome" because Joe and I have been listening to a lot of klezmer music lately. Jeff was great, and Joe was, as per the usual, terrific. The lineup will be playing together as often as possible, as Margret, who had never been to Calvin's, really enjoyed herself. Things are very good indeed - though the addition of violin to "I Thought She Was a Goth" makes it more Voltaire than Voltaire. Just hope he doesn't want me dead!

The new manager won't let me put up fliers, because "corporate hasn't approved them." He also decided that I don't have to be paid, contract or no. Bastard. But I got the last word tonight. This was the "When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose" final show, and all stops were removed. I wore my Java Joe's t-shirt. I made a few nasty remarks about the company, some witty words about the new manager, and stomped on a starbucks cup. Any dirty words that are normally altered were left in. Not one, but two anti-starbucks songs were played. I played "Science Fiction," with Josh shouting out the audience lines. The whole experience of playing at Starbucks has been like something out of "This Is Spinal Tap." The audience loved it. Even without the aid of fireworks, (this time), I guess you could say that I went out with a bang.

Good show if I do say so. At the opening, I was playing to the crowd (the part in the front, anyway) and they were digging it. When that part left, the crowd was lousy. Never aknowledged me, except to ask for "Freebird." I ended the show by saying "I'd say you've been great and I love you all, but you haven't and I don't! I hate all of you! And this town, too! I think with the proceeds from the tip jar, I'll go get a damn Happy Meal. I hate this whole damned region, not to mention this whole chain. Good night, ya mangy bums!" And I stick with that.

One of the best shows ever (though the second set started out particularly shotty, and didn't really get good until "Train Song.") The first set, which was recorded on a multitrack minidisc rig for possible inclusion on the record or on this page, was almost perfect but for a few flaws (such as fluctuating guitar volume). One of the best attended shows I've ever played, one of the best paying as well. If you weren't there, you missed out on a fine show.
